Meet Maeve McDermott

The HBA Voices of Tomorrow Affinity Group fosters conversations about women in leadership, navigating your career as a young professional, the evolving landscape of organizational culture in healthcare, balancing being a working mom, communication breakdowns, financial wellbeing, the multigenerational workplace – the list goes on. As of 2025, we are living in an era where having diverse conversations like these in a professional, work-oriented setting has become a privilege. It is extremely important to me to bring these conversations to as many people as possible. I want to be part of creating a safe space to learn and grow from the diverse perspectives and identities that all of us hold. It is important to me to pay forward the impact that HBA has had on my career and my identity.

My involvement with the HBA has introduced me to a world of wonderful, hard-working people. Over the years, I have really enjoyed getting to know HBA members who have a vast range of backgrounds and interests. As a young(er) professional who started her career in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, to me, the HBA represents a community I know I can rely on to yield fruitful relationships and encounters in this era of remote work.

I was introduced to the HBA by my employer, Advanced Clinical. Over the past four years, Advanced Clinical has encouraged me to pursue opportunities with the HBA ranging from participating in the HBA Mentoring Program to attending the HBA Annual Conference (in 2022 and 2023!). Advanced Clinical loves to celebrate the growth it sees in its employees, whether that be on the job, or in their outside-of-work commitments – like the HBA. At any given HBA event that the Voices of Tomorrow team helps to coordinate, I know that I will likely have the support of fellow Advanced Clinical employees. This leads to an open, symbiotic relationship between the conversations we are having with the HBA Voices of Tomorrow Affinity Group and the conversations we are having at work with Advanced Clinical.

HBA’s vision to Create Women Leaders for Life is entwined with an idea that I hold close to my heart: Empowered Women Empower Women. My experiences with the HBA have repeatedly reinforced this idea and made me feel empowered. I have seen women empowering women in conversations at the HBA Annual Conference. I have seen women empowering women in the International Women’s Day panels and discussion topics. I have seen women empowering women during our monthly Voices of Tomorrow coffee chats, where HBA members have open conversations about their personal and work-life experiences. I see myself contributing to the vision of Creating Women Leaders for Life by empowering members of HBA Voices of Tomorrow to pursue the professional advancement they hope to achieve in their career and to celebrate milestones (both personal and professional) that occur in life.

What skills have you acquired or strengthened during your time as an HBA Member Leader?
As a member of the Voices of Tomorrow Leadership Team, I have been able to hone skills that I typically would not be able to utilize in my day-to-day job as a biostatistician. I have particularly appreciated the opportunity to practice project management skills and to use a more creative, people-oriented part of my brain when planning events for our Affinity Group.

What is your favorite part of serving as a Member Leader for the HBA?
I love hearing the interesting ideas and thoughts that HBA members share during event Q+A sessions, event breakout rooms, and coffee chat discussions.
