HBA Toronto November 2021 Spotlight – Ethel Zammit

HBA Toronto is pleased to announce that its November 2021 Spotlight is
Ethel Zammit, Partner Manager at RamSoft Inc.

Tell us a little bit about your career path/journey:
As a teen, I learned about a medical imaging company based in Mississauga from my local paper. I thought it was cool and began my working life in diagnostic imaging as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. It was a challenging role but not as fulfilling as I hoped it would be. I had been conducting informational interviews long before they became a thing; I think I am just naturally curious about people and learning more about their career journeys. My inspiration for pursuing my MBA came from the director of imaging at the busy community hospital where I worked. She was a tremendous example of professional leadership in action and someone I greatly admired. I would have never entertained the thought of going to grad school – I was one of the first people in my family to graduate from university so there was no formal path. But sometimes someone comes into your life and lights the way. I was in the middle of the MBA program when an entry-level job ad (remember those?) came up in my community newspaper, at the company I had learned about years before. I applied and got the job. That company has had many iterations and is now part of IBM Watson Healthcare. Since then, I have worked in product development and marketing roles at healthcare IT start-ups and Fortune 500™ companies across the healthcare continuum. I am passionate about healthcare innovation.

What has benefited you the most from being an HBA volunteer? 
Having the opportunity to leverage my network and apply my project management, communication, and listening skills effectively. Our chapter has a lot of dynamic and energetic personalities and it’s a blast trying to keep up.

What are your interests outside of work and the HBA? 
I enjoy traveling, participating in a champion pub-league trivia team, boxing, and watching classic films. The impact of Covid and social distancing gave me the time to read, advance my sewing skills and learn how to play electric guitar (badly).

What's the best advice you've received? 
Happiness is not the destination, it’s only a side effect of a life lived truthfully. It reminds me to be true to myself and my values.
