Two Perspectives, One Purpose: A Mentor and Mentee Reflect on Their HBA Experience
The power of mentorship lies not just in the exchange of knowledge, but in the mutual growth it fosters. At the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA), the Mentoring Program continues to create transformative experiences for both mentors and mentees. In this spotlight, we feature a compelling conversation between mentee Rocio Milla, whose journey through the program helped her find her voice and advance her career, and mentor Ann Lucchesi, a passionate advocate for inclusive leadership and professional development. Their story illustrates how meaningful connection, guidance, and shared purpose can shape the future of women in healthcare.
Mentee – Rocio Milla
Q: When did you first hear about the HBA Mentoring Program, and what motivated you to join as a mentee?
A: I joined my first HBA Mentorship circle in 2023. I heard about the program via an HBA email as I had joined Hologic’s HBA Ambassador program.
Q: How did the HBA Mentoring Program support your professional growth?
A: I have always seen myself as an introvert-something many people might find surprising now. However, being part of the HBA mentorship program played a key role in helping me open up and step outside my comfort zone, largely because of the safe space created within our mentorship circles, and the approachable mentors who are always willing to help and make themselves available. Additionally, the sessions provided me with opportunities to lead meetings, present ideas, and express myself freely. I have since carried this confidence into my daily responsibilities and no longer hesitate to lead or present in a meeting.
Q: Can you share a specific moment or piece of advice from your mentor that had a lasting impact on your career?
A: Overall, my mentor’s professional guidance, praise, support, and encouragement- especially from someone I admire professionally, boosted my confidence, making it easier for me to engage with senior leadership both within and outside my organization. I was also moved to continue to advocate for myself. I am happy to say this was instrumental in securing a promotion!
Q: How did the HBA network enhance your experience in the program?
A: Being part of the HBA Network is great! I was able to attend several in person meetings including 2 HBA Conferences and moderate/organize a fireside chat at Hologic with HBA CEO Mary Stutts. The networking and benefits are extremely valuable - including the complimentary career coaching sessions offered by HBA at the conferences. There are so many resources within HBA! I was happy to take advantage of many of them.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering joining the HBA Mentoring Program as a mentee?
A: You get what you put into it! Do not hesitate to sign up, then make sure you are present and participating, plus listening to the incredibly valuable ideas and information provided by others in your circle. Remember it is a safe space, so feel free to come out of your comfort zone.
Mentor – Ann Lucchesi
Q: Why did you decide to become a mentor in the HBA Mentoring Program?
A: I wanted to become a mentor in the HBA Mentoring Program because having sought mentorship throughout my own career, I recognize the value of being available to others in this way. I strongly believe in the power of mentorship to accelerate personal and professional growth. Joining HBA’s program felt like a meaningful way to give back, especially by supporting the development of future leaders in healthcare. I’m also passionate about fostering inclusive leadership. Being a mentor allows me to contribute to that mission while continuing to learn and grow alongside my mentees.
Q: Can you share a memorable moment from your mentoring relationship that highlights the program’s value?
A: One of the most memorable moments from my mentoring experience was when one of my mentees organized a remarkable HBA event at her company. She hosted a Fireside Chat with HBA CEO Mary Stutts and a panel of the company’s leadership, focusing on the importance of inclusive diversity and the power of partnership. This initiative not only showcased her leadership and organizational skills but also her commitment to advancing HBA's mission. Witnessing her growth and success was incredibly rewarding. It perfectly reflects the value of the HBA Mentoring Program: it's not just about career advice; it's about empowering others to unlock their full potential in a supportive and strategic way.
Q: How did the HBA Mentoring Program’s structure enhance your ability to mentor effectively?
A: The HBA Mentoring Program provides a structured approach with accessible online tools that supplement the mentor - mentee discourse and relationship. This made a significant difference in how I was able to mentor effectively. From the initial orientation exercises to the regular group meetings and resources provided, the program offered a clear framework that kept our conversations focused. The HBA structure also created a safe space for open dialogue, which helped build trust.
Q: What would you say to encourage other experienced professionals to join the HBA Mentoring Program as mentors?
A: As a mentor, you don't just impart knowledge—you engage in a dynamic exchange that enhances your own leadership skills, broadens your perspective, and deepens your commitment to advancing women in healthcare. The program's structured approach, with clear goals and regular check-ins, ensures a meaningful and rewarding experience for both mentor and mentee. By becoming a mentor, you can provide support and perspective to those who are seeking it. I found that I personally gained fresh insights, new friends, and renewed purpose in my own professional journey.
