Honoring the Life and Legacy of Melissa (Millicent) Gryczka
The Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Melissa (Millicent) Gryczka, a co-founder of the HBA.
Nearly five decades ago, Melissa’s vision and dedication helped establish the HBA, shaping our mission to further the advancement and impact of women in the business of healthcare. Her extraordinary career, service, and generosity touched countless lives—from her leadership in healthcare and advocacy to her teaching and community involvement across the world.
Melissa passed away on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, following a brief illness. She was a woman of intellect, humor, and boundless generosity, whose presence brightened every community she called home: Manhattan and East Quogue, New York; Galveston, Texas; and beyond.
Her academic and professional accomplishments were many. She earned her pharmacy degree at Fordham University and St. John’s University and went on to help shape the healthcare industry not only as a practitioner but as a leader and advocate. As co-creator of the HBA, Melissa tirelessly advanced the role and recognition of women in healthcare business. Later, she pursued ESL studies at Columbia University and taught English to Buddhist monks in Myanmar—work that also supported young women in an orphanage she helped establish, ensuring they could access education and opportunity.
Melissa also gave deeply of her time to the communities she loved, volunteering with organizations such as the Grand Opera House, Galveston Tree Conservancy, Galveston County Food Bank, Galveston Historical Foundation, the Southampton Animal Shelter, and Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Whether through her Zen garden, a lively political conversation, or a shared cocktail among friends, Melissa embodied warmth, wit, and generosity of spirit.
We honor Melissa’s extraordinary life and extend our deepest sympathy to all who knew and loved her. Her legacy continues to inspire us as we carry forward the work she began.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, 5 September 2025, from 4–6 p.m. at Scott-Rothwell Funeral Home, Hampton Bays, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, an organization Melissa loved and supported.
Remembrances and condolences may be shared on Melissa’s Tribute Wall.
