Meet Danièle Bolap

Volunteering with the HBA is especially important to me because it allows me to speak up about issues close to my heart. I believe in paving the way for others and championing diversity. It's not just about giving back; it's about personal growth and confidence-building. As an HBA leader, volunteering has profoundly impacted both my personal and professional development.

Meeting supportive women who share my goals and passion for helping others, particularly women, has been incredibly fulfilling. I'm driven by the desire to stay inspired and engaged in topics like women's leadership, authenticity, and social justice. Making a positive impact in my community is at the core of why I volunteer.

It's more than just coming together; it's about empowering each other. Giving back in meaningful ways is my commitment, offering me a sense of purpose and connection to something larger than myself.

Volunteering has truly transformed my career journey in countless ways. It's not just about acquiring new skills or expanding my network; it's about personal growth and empowerment. Stepping out of my comfort zone through volunteering has been a game-changer, boosting my confidence and pushing me to stretch beyond my limits. The increased skills, visibility, and recognition I've gained have not only advanced my career but have also equipped me with the tools and confidence to mentor and coach others effectively.

Moreover, volunteering has been instrumental in refining my leadership skills and connecting me with inspiring mentors who have guided me on my path to growth. By going above and beyond the minimum job requirements, I've been able to cultivate my personal brand and differentiate myself in my field. It's been a journey of self-discovery, allowing me to define what success means to me on my own terms.

But perhaps most importantly, volunteering has been the driving force behind restoring my confidence and reminding me of my own capabilities. Each moment spent giving back has fueled my sense of purpose and it’s a reminder of the incredible impact I can make when I believe in myself wholeheartedly.

My favorite HBA event I ever attended was the official launch of our Montreal branch in April 2023. The atmosphere was charged with emotion, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the audience was truly heartening. Alongside board members Chantal, Claudia, Sandra, and Stéphanie, I felt immense joy witnessing the success we'd achieved after months of dedicated effort.

Being part of the panel and sharing our personal stories was incredibly fulfilling, as our challenges resonated deeply with the audience. The presence of HBA Canada board members flying in from Toronto to support us added another layer of significance to the event, highlighting the strength of our community and allies.

Reflecting on that milestone, I realize that saying "yes" to this opportunity was pivotal. It opened doors to numerous growth experiences that have shaped my journey. I owe much of my success to the unwavering support of my colleagues and fellow HBA members, who constantly encourage and uplift me.

This event underscored the importance of community support. None of us succeed alone; we all need guidance and encouragement. It's within this supportive community that I've found the courage to step out of my comfort zone and truly be seen and heard.

Volunteering has expanded my network in ways I never imagined. It's introduced me to a diverse range of individuals both within and outside my organization who share my interests and values. Being part of this community of women has not only fostered meaningful connections but also provided a platform for genuine and engaging conversations with like-minded individuals. We're all undeniably connected through our shared commitment to the mission of HBA, and this shared purpose has strengthened the bonds within our network, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

The most valuable lesson I learned from a fellow volunteer is just how much of an impact I can have on someone's day. It might seem small, but a simple act of kindness or support can truly brighten someone's day in ways you wouldn't even imagine. But perhaps the most eye-opening lesson for me was realizing that I'm already a leader, even when I didn't see it in myself. I used to doubt my abilities and question whether I had what it takes to lead, but being part of this volunteering journey has shown me that leadership comes in many forms and it’s about making a positive difference, no matter how big or small.

My employer encourages me to volunteer for HBA because they value personal growth and development for the employees. By providing unlimited memberships and showcasing the value of HBA through internal posts, it demonstrates their commitment to the mission and their DEI strategy. In today's fast-paced world, it's crucial for us to continually stretch ourselves, try new things, and give back to our communities. They understand that trying new things and giving back to our communities not only enriches our lives but also increases our engagement at work. Personally, I discovered my passion for giving back when I took advantage of the free membership opportunity offered by my employer.

What skills have you acquired or fine-tuned during your time as an HBA volunteer that you feel will help you Accelerate Transformational Leadership?

The HBA isn't just about empowering women—it's about empowering me to take charge of my own career journey. Through the HBA, I've gained invaluable opportunities to lead, advance my career, and uplift others along the way. I've had the privilege of leading teams through various projects, gaining insight into my leadership style and how to inspire individuals to excel..

One of my proudest moments was leading a team of 12 volunteers, where I learned the importance of delegation and the power of motivation. Embracing new opportunities, even when the timing seems off, has been a lesson in seizing the moment and trusting in my abilities—a mindset shift that's opened doors to incredible growth.

As a volunteer leader with HBA, I've continually learned, grown, and taken risks, refining my skills and leadership capabilities along the way. These experiences have not only boosted my confidence but have also reshaped how I perceive myself and my potential. As I reflect on my time with HBA, I'm confident that the skills I've acquired and fine-tuned will propel me forward. From communication to collaboration, adaptability to resilience, volunteering is equipping me with the tools I need to lead with purpose and impact.

My favorite part of volunteering for the HBA is the sense of empowerment and growth it brings. Being part of this supportive community feels like being surrounded by allies who uplift and inspire me with every interaction.

Every time I meet with the amazing HBA Montreal board members, it's like a little boost of positivity. We create this safe space where we can share our stories, knowing we're all on the same journey towards making things better for everyone.

I'm deeply gratified knowing that my career journey and insights can positively impact other women as they navigate their own paths. The feedback I receive from members about their growth warms my heart, knowing that I've played a part in their development. But what's even more touching is when people reach out to tell me that I've helped them find their confidence or be more comfortable being themselves. We all face moments of doubt, but within our board, we support each other, reminding one another of our strengths and abilities.

Working together feels purposeful, and the network of women within HBA is truly exceptional. Knowing that I have this community of supportive individuals just a phone call or text away is invaluable. It's a collaborative and uplifting environment that makes every moment spent volunteering with HBA incredibly fulfilling.

I volunteer for the united force for change because it's both enjoyable and enriching. I have a passion for learning and thrive on challenges. Being part of this movement allows me to stay inspired and engaged in topics related to women and equity, which is incredibly fulfilling.

Seeing the impact of using my voice and empowering others brings me immense satisfaction. I truly believe in the power of coming together to support and uplift each other. Advocating for change and equity is a deeply personal mission for me—I want to be a catalyst for gender parity, equality and inclusivity, empowering women to be their best selves.

The continuous learning experiences and skill development opportunities offered through HBA have been invaluable in shaping me as a leader. But beyond that, it's the unwavering support of the community that keeps me deeply engaged and involved. I'm driven by the desire to create a better tomorrow, not just for myself, but for future generations, including my children. Being part of this change, embodying the change I wish to see, is my way of making a difference in the world.

What would be your advice to someone thinking about joining or getting more involved with the HBA?

I would say go for it! Volunteering has been such a rewarding experience for me. It's not just about giving back; it’s about discovering new strengths and parts of yourself you never knew existed. Plus, it's a fantastic way to expand your network and make meaningful connections with others who share your passion.

Even if you're on the reserved side like me, don't let that hold you back. I'm an introvert, and not a fan of small talk. But the connections I've made through the HBA have been incredibly meaningful. Volunteering has allowed me to connect with people in a quieter, more genuine way.

My advice would be to try volunteering for a cause you are passionate about, it's a fantastic opportunity to grow personally and professionally while making a real difference in the world.

Anything else you would like to share?

When it comes to getting involved, there are multiple opportunities, so stay true to yourself and your interests. One of those opportunities is the mentoring program.

Initially, I didn't fully grasp the power of having a mentor until I was paired with an incredible one. Her guidance and advice have been invaluable, helping me boost my self-confidence and make significant strides in my personal growth journey. Whether you're looking to switch roles, advance in your current position, or simply gain clarity on your career path, the mentoring program is a must.

For me, mentorship has been another cornerstone of my growth journey. It's not just about building skills; it's about having a support system that highlights your strengths, nurtures your talents, and helps you develop those all-important soft skills. Having mentors has given me a safe space to navigate challenges and validate my experiences—a priceless resource in today's world.

Moreover, serving as a mentor has been an enlightening experience and incredibly rewarding. There's something truly enlightening about giving back and helping someone else achieve their goals.

I encourage others to embrace opportunities for growth and learning.
