Letter from HBA Los Angeles President Disha Patel: Q2 Reflections

Second quarter for HBA Los Angeles has been another foundational, strong few months. April, May and June have been nothing but networking, continued real time, discussions on what is happening in the industry, engagement of new sponsors, the on-boarding of the newest corporate partner MannKind, and the kickoff of the HBA LA advisory board.

In April, HBA LA provided opportunities for radical hospitality with "Meet the HBA" gatherings all over the LA area. These evenings of purposeful networking, practicing of elevator speeches and creating meaningful connections were sponsored by Syneos Health and iBio Analytical Services, LLC.

We also rolled out the regional mentoring program for the LA, SD, SF, Seattle and OC chapters.

In May, HBA LA partnered with Amgen's HBA ambassador team and Biocom to bring to life a signature event focused on digital health. Members and non-members had an opportunity to hear how leaders in this field are working to create comprehensive, patient-centric experiences. We were grateful to have an accomplished and expert panel consisting of Dr. Renee Dua, CMO and co-founder of Heal, Dr. Zubin Eapen, CMO of CareMore, Dr. Kathryn Zavala, VP operations and business development of MedTech Innovator, and Seemi Kazmi, director digital health of Amgen.

In June, continuing its impact of enhancing the surrounding healthcare community, the Amgen HBA ambassador team teamed up with MannKind Corporation to sponsor a wonderful, fun evening showcasing executives from large to mid to small size companies and a discussion on "Leading Through an Evolving Healthcare Landscape."  Panel members included representation from Amgen Inc, MannKind, Opiant Pharmaceuticals and Zealand Pharma.

June was also an exciting month with the recruitment of a new corporate partner, MannKind Corporation. MannKind is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of therapeutic products for patients with diseases such as diabetes. In addition, HBA LA was approached by HBA Central to repeat of our March event on AI and machine learning in healthcare. I am humbled that our local programming has caught the attention and has made such a positive impact on a topic that continues deeper engagement and conversations.

In addition, if that was not enough, in June the HBA LA advisory board kicked off its first meeting. This board consists of enthusiastic executives from different walks in healthcare who have a deep commitment to advancing the HBA mission and advisors to the HBA LA board. We are happy to have Kimberly Farrell (Unlimited Performance Training LLC), Deborah Kazenelson Deane (Chandler Chicco Agency, a Syneos Health Company) Michelle Campbell Ross (RGP), and Stuart Tross (MannKind) provide their expertise and wisdom to our chapter.

The HBA LA board has some wonderful events planned for the second half so stay tuned. We are thankful for the continued support we have received this year. One of the board's vision when we stepped into our roles was to build a strong foundation, bring to life some really important topics in the industry and to infuse enthusiasm into the HBA mission. While more work is still to be done, I am impressed by how many people, both women and men, and companies we have been able to bring along in the journey.

I hope everyone has a relaxing and fun summer.
