Annual ACE Award
The HBA established the ACE (Advancement, Commitment, Engagement) Award to recognize best in class corporate initiatives that help to advance and enhance the careers of women in their respective organizations.
Building on its long-standing tradition of recognizing outstanding individuals who exemplify its mission in action, with such prestigious awards as Woman of the Year, Honorable Mentor, Volunteer of the Year, and Rising Star, the ACE award’s purpose is to recognize organizations that offer innovative approaches that support the HBA mission to further the advancement and impact of women in healthcare worldwide.
The HBA is pleased to accept applications from public and private companies and professional services firms engaged in the healthcare industry. Entry is open to corporations regardless of their support of HBA, but naturally we hope that entrants will avail themselves of the benefits of partnership with HBA and join as Corporate Partners.
Application process
All organizations engaged in the healthcare industry are invited to apply for the ACE award. There is an application fee of $500 that is waived for corporate partners of the HBA. The ACE award application must be completed and submitted no later than May 27, 2010 for consideration.
An independent panel of judges including industry experts, leading business school academics, and accomplished healthcare executives, will evaluate each application based on pre-specified criteria contained in the ACE award application template.
Submission deadline is May 27, 2010

A Word to Applicants from the HBA

2009 Winner Abbott’s Women Leaders in Action (WLA) Employee Network
The Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) named Abbott’s Women Leaders in Action (WLA) employee network as the winner of the 2009 HBA ACE Award. Launched in 2001, Abbott’s WLA is an important part of the company's broader commitment to build more diverse leadership through its efforts to support women’s leadership and development. Abbott's WLA has nearly 5,000 members from across the organization, and is led by an executive committee comprised of executive sponsors across all areas and functions of Abbott. This includes six corporate officers, the highest-ranking executive level at Abbott. The Abbott Executive Inclusion Council, chaired by company Chairman and CEO, Miles D. White, also works in conjunction with the WLA Executive Committee, further demonstrating Abbott’s senior commitment. By focusing on career development, mentoring and informal networking, WLA and other Abbott employee groups expand opportunities for all employees to develop critical leadership skills.
"The global marketplace has never been more dynamic or challenging – that's why Abbott's Women Leaders in Action is so critical," said Mary Szela, senior vice president, U.S. Pharmaceuticals. "WLA ensures our ability to compete and win, by supporting and strengthening the next generation of women leaders. This commitment to developing leaders is a key driver of Abbott's current – and future – success."
2008 Winner Novartis Pharmaceuticals Women’s Initiatives – EWIN/WIL
In 2008 Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation (NPC) was honored with the HBA Ace Awarrd for the depth, breadth and global reach of its women's leadership programs — headquarters-based Empowering Women to Impact Novartis (EWIN) and its field force counterpart, Women in Leadership (WIL), EWIN, marking its fifth anniversary, and WIL, looking ahead to its 10th, began as grass roots initiatives, gaining the support of executive management and becoming part of the corporate culture as they grew. The judges saw the involvement of top-level executives and the accompanying commitment of funding, time and executive resources as critical to success. A key factor in the award was the incorporation of diversity benchmarks into the NPC performance management system.
2007 Winner Johnson & Johnson Women’s Leadership Initiative
Johnson & Johnson's Women's Leadership Initiative was named as the first winner of the HBA's ACE Award. Johnson & Johnson was chosen for its Women's Initiative (WLI), a grassroots employee organization with 47 chapters worldwide and membership in all business segments of the company. Since the launch of the WLI in 1995, Johnson & Johnson has tracked significant increases in the numbers and percentages of women on the Executive Committee, among company presidents and managing directors outside the U.S., corporate officers, company group chairs, executive and director level women and those with both line and staff management positions.
